Duke University Hospital Center for Advanced Practice Job Description Critical Care/Acure Care Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) Respiroatory Care Unit (RCU) Position Summary The Duke Hospital Respiratory Care Unit Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant) provides direct patient care services for critically ill complex (multi-organ) patients in an intensive care setting in collaboration with and under the supervision of the Medical and Surgical ICU Teams. The NP/PA performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care and discharge of patients, and provides direct patient care services. The NP/PA contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership to the organization. Position Requirements Education: CCPA: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. Master's degree strongly preferred. Critical care fellowship suggested or critical care rotation(s) during PA training program. CCNP: Completion of an Acute Care / Critical Care Nurse Practitioner program. PA: Work requires graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies. NP: Work requires completion of accredited graduate level Nurse Practitioner program. Licensure: NP: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina and approval to practice as an NP. PA: Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina. Responsible to The Respiratory Care Unit Advanced Practice Provider will report directly to the Center for Advanced Practice Team leader and Director. The RCU APP's clinical practice is supervised by the Medical and Surgical ICU Supervising Physician or under the supervision of the attending physicians listed on the Back-up Supervising Physician list. In addition, s/he will be accountable for clinical outcomes and defined quality indicators as determined by the appropriate inpatient unit / Clinical Service Unit Balanced Score Card and to the standards set forth by the Center for Advanced Practice Minimum Qualifications Education Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, preferred. with a Master's degree in Nursing. Critical Care / Acute Care NP Master's or completion of ACNP/CCNP post-Master's program strongly Experience 1 Year of Experience in an ICU setting (RN or NP), 3 years of experience strongly preferred. Degrees, Licensures, Certifications Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required.
